Replacing a Non-Compliant Commercial Roller-Shutter in Tiverton, Devon

Our client invited Easy-Roll to inspect an old roller-shutter at their commercial building on a small industrial estate in Tiverton, in Devon, initially with a view to servicing it. 

However, it quickly became apparent to our inspection team that these manually operated doors, due to their age, weren't compliant with current safety legislation. The main issue was that they didn't have fallback protection, meaning that if the spring inside the barrel (which helps lift the weight of the door) was to break, the door could come crashing down like a guillotine. 

The implications for the safety of our client's employees or a member of the public were clear, so we gave our client two options:

1. Change the top end of the door to include a new barrel, tube motor and safety brake, keeping the existing curtain
2. Replace the door entirely. 

Option number one would have involved less outlay in the short-term, and the old curtain would have been legally compliant at that point, but it was already showing signs of deterioration, and would probably require higher costs to keep it in good repair and operating efficiently going forward. 

As our client was currently undertaking improvements to the buildings, including the roof and side cladding, they took the long-term view that installing the entire door was the best solution for them. They opted for a new door in a striking blue colour to match the cladding. Easy-Roll's installation team made short work of safely dismantling the old shutter; the new one was professionally installed, tested and working efficiently within one working day.

This was a very satisfying job for us to undertake. Transforming a rusty, old, non-compliant and unsafe door into one that we know is safe for everyone that uses it or works near it is very gratifying. This was obviously important to our client, too, and they have the added bonus that their new motorised, insulated roller-door, in its fresh colour, really adds to the overall appearance of the building.
