Installing security window shutters: important considerations
From functionality and compliance to cost and maintenance, there are many considerations to explore when you are looking for secure window shutters to protect your commercial or industrial premises.
The following guide will help business managers take the most important factors into account so you can make a thorough and balanced decision.
What are the security benefits of installing window shutters?
- Controlled access – Many modern shutters come with automated systems that can be integrated into the building's overall security system. This allows for controlled access to the premises, which can be particularly useful after hours or during holidays.
- Weather protection – Besides security from intruders, shutters also protect against extreme weather conditions such as storms and high winds, which can shatter glass and damage property.
- Privacy and confidentiality – For businesses that require confidentiality, such as law offices or medical clinics, shutters can provide privacy after business hours, ensuring sensitive information is kept out of sight.
- Insurance benefits – Installing security measures like shutters may lower insurance premiums as they reduce the risk of break-ins and property damage.
What types of shutters are available, and which is most suitable for my needs?
The right type of window shutter depends on a combination of factors including the level of security required, aesthetic considerations, operational convenience, and cost. Here’s how solid roller shutters, concertina shutters, and grille shutters stack up in these areas:
Solid Roller Shutters
Security Level: Solid roller shutters offer the highest level of security among the three types. Made from durable materials like steel or aluminum, they provide a strong barrier against intruders, vandalism, and severe weather conditions. They are nearly impenetrable when closed.
Aesthetics: These shutters can be perceived as utilitarian with a modern look that may not blend well with all architectural styles. However, they can be painted or finished to match the building’s exterior, improving their visual appeal.
Operation: They are generally automated, making them easy to operate with the push of a button. This can be particularly advantageous in large commercial settings where manual operation of shutters could be impractical.
Concertina Shutters
Security Level: Concertina shutters offer robust protection and are made from heavy-duty materials. While they are strong, they might not provide the same level of security against determined intrusions as solid roller shutters.
Aesthetics: Concertina shutters can be more visually appealing than solid roller shutters and are available in various styles and colors. They can fold back unobtrusively when not in use, maintaining a building's aesthetic appeal.
Operation: These shutters are easy to operate manually, sliding horizontally to close or open along a track. This can be advantageous in locations where power outages are common, as they do not rely on electricity to function.
Security Grille Shutters
Security Level: Grille shutters provide good security and allow for visibility and light transmission, making them ideal for retail locations where product visibility is important even when the business is closed. They are less secure than solid shutters but deter smash-and-grab thefts effectively.
Aesthetics: Grille shutters can enhance the appearance of a business, particularly in shopping areas, as they provide a transparent yet secure barrier. They are less obtrusive and can maintain the storefront’s visibility and aesthetic.
Operation: Like roller shutters, grille shutters can be automated, which facilitates ease of use and can be integrated into a building’s overall security system.
Choosing the Right Shutter
The decision on which shutter type to install should be based on:
Business Location: High-crime areas might necessitate solid roller shutters, while more secure or visually-focused areas could benefit from concertina or grille shutters.
Business Type: Retail stores may prefer security grille shutters for their aesthetic and display qualities, whereas warehouses might opt for the robust security of solid roller shutters.
Aesthetic Requirements: Businesses in historic or upscale areas might prefer concertina shutters that blend in with the architectural style.
Operational Needs: Automated shutters are beneficial for businesses needing quick and easy operation, especially in larger or more sophisticated premises.
What material options are available and what are their benefits and drawbacks?
Shutters can be made from materials like steel, aluminum, or polycarbonate. The choice impacts durability, strength, and cost.
The main material options we use at Easy-Roll are single-skin galvanised steel with 75mm curved laths. we also use extruded aluminium with 38mm twin-skin laths where there is low headroom, as it creates a smaller roll, or 60mm when you have a little more headroom or a large window to cover. Bigger laths tend to be stronger and flex less over a bigger span.
Steel is often preferred but aluminium is a little cheaper. Although the steel is galvanised, aluminium could be better suited to areas nearer the sea owing to the inpact of salty air causing corrosion to steel over long periods.
Can shutters be customised to fit the specific sizes and styles of my windows?
Yes, Easy-Roll will visit your premises to measure up carefully and note any unusual requirements. Your window shutters are customised to your bespoke needs.
We offer a range of shutter styles to complement your windows, taking into account your aesthetic requirements and security needs.
Local building regulations
Compliance with local planning and building regulations is crucial to avoid legal issues and ensure that the installation process goes smoothly. In some historically sensitive areas, where the window shutters you’ve selected compromises the appearance or value of neighbouring properties, it’s best to discuss your plans with the local council first.
That said, you’ll be in a better position to mitigate any potential objections if you highlight:
- The security aspect of installing shutters, which will act as an excellent crime deterrent in the area.
- The quality of the shutters. Emphasise the manufacturing specifications of the shutters you’ve chosen.
- The aesthetic appeal of the shutters you have in mind, demonstrating that they are in keeping with the local street scene.
Are window shutters easy to use in everyday situations?
When professionally installed and regularly serviced, secure window shutters are very easy to use. The motorised shutters installed by Easy-Roll can be opened or closed via an internal rocker switch, or with an external key switch using the keys provided.
What maintenance is required to keep the shutters in good working condition?
Your shutters will operate well for many years, but regular use over a long period, as well as snow, rain and high winds can take their toll. Regular inspections, care and maintenance is a cost-effective way to keep them working at their best and prolong their life.
Easy-Roll can provide all necessary repairs, as well as scheduled maintenance and servicing contracts.
How long will the installation process take?
You’ve got a business to run, so it’s important to know how long any disruption might last. We can’t speak for other businesses, but the typical timeframe for Easy-Roll to install your security shutters is just one-day. This hopefully minimises any impact on your business activities.
